I am a professor and research consultant located in Johnson City, Tennessee. My specializations include qualitative research design and implementation, qualitative social media analysis, the use of data analysis software (e.g. ATLAS.ti and MAXQDA), and language-based methods such as discourse and narrative analysis.
My research and consulting work centers on the use of digital tools and spaces in a variety of qualitative research contexts in the USA and abroad. I’ve been a tenured faculty member at the University of Tennessee, the University of Georgia. I am currently at East Tennessee State University. International experiences have always been a priority for me, mostly recently as a Fulbright Distinguished Scholar in the Humanities and Social Sciences at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poland.
My first teaching experience was in Lesotho, Southern Africa as a Peace Corps Volunteer and over the years I’ve been a visiting scholar at the Center for Advanced Internet Studies in Germany, the University of Innsbruck, and the University of Tasmania. I have facilitated professional development events for the Indiana University satellite campus in North Macedonia (South East European University) and for University of Alabama International Programs in Quito, Ecuador.
Consulting clients have included Discerning Leadership, Evidera, Adelphi Values, Sandia National Lab, and Refugee Transitions.
I am co-author of three books, including Doing Qualitative Research in a Digital World (Sage, 2022); Looking for Insight, Transformation and Learning in Online Talk (Routledge, 2019); and Digital Tools for Qualitative Research (Sage, 2014).
